MS Ireland launches two new booklets about exercise and MS...

The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland is delighted to launch a further two new resource publications to its library. Entitled 'Everybody Stretch' and 'MS and Fitness', these publications have been made available to us courtesy of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. Both booklets explore various facets of exercise and MS and demonstrate practical and safe ways for all levels and abilities to keep fit and stay active.

The importance of good information, especially in the area of exercise and MS has been highlighted to us through our national programme Getting the Balance Right where the benefits of appropriate exercise related activity have been documented.

Aidan Larkin, coordinator of the ‘Getting The Balance Right’ programme adapted the publications and says of their benefits,

“We know that it is important to remain physically active, as much to preserve, and even improve, our abilities so as to combat the harmful effects of inactivity (stiffness, muscle loss, reduced flexibility etc). We know that regular targeted exercise reduces MS related fatigue and also improves self perceived quality of life. Exercise – regular efforts at a certain intensity level – is the key in this new approach to activity for people with MS.”

We hope you find these publications helpful not only as a personal resource for yourself but also for the people you may be planning an exercise programme with. Check out other exercise related research and resources.
