Disease Modifying Drugs
Disease modifying drugs can affect the course of MS. Although not a cure, disease-modifying drugs act to reduce the number and severity of MS relapses. They also reduce the number of new MS lesions. It is not yet known whether these drugs will slow down the rate of disability in the long term.
There are 5 disease-modifying drugs licensed and available in Ireland. The first four below are available under the Long Term Illness Scheme, which means the cost is covered by the State. Tysabri is funded through individual hospitals. The information sheet summaries basic facts about disease modifying drugs generally available and provides some practical details if you are considering the drugs. Your neurologist and MS nurse will be able to give you more help and information.
