High Court rules against assisted suicide

Person with MS, Marie Fleming, in a landmark court case gave evidence in the High Court last December to contest the  validity of the Criminal Law Suicide Act 1993. Under the act a person who assists another to die faces prosecution.

The High Court said while her right to autonomy was affected by the ban, it could not agree the legislation was disproportionate.

The three-judge divisional High Court gave its judgment today, Thursday, 10th January 2013 after a six-day hearing last month. Summary of Judgment
