There really is no excuse for not reading these days – with the Kindle on your phone or tablet you’re never far from a good book! Many kids are now more likely to be more engaged with smartphones, iPads, YouTube and Facebook than a book or magazine.
Remember how your evenings were spent outside trying to make the most of the fading dusk? Those were the days and without sounding too ‘In our day…’ about it we think it’s time to show our kids that kicking a ball with friends or using your imagination to create a story are just as fun – if not more so – as downloading an app!
Five reasons we have heard from kids about why they don’t read (seriously):
1. It’s too boring
2. They don’t have the time
3. It’s too hard
4. It’s not important
5. Its not fun
Now telling us reading is boring is a bit like giving us a bar of chocolate but saying we can only have one square. When you think about it logically, it is almost impossible that every single book published is boring, no? Whatever your child’s interest we can almost guarantee there’s a book out there on the topic and wouldn’t that alone make reading more fun?
Hearing that a child doesn’t have time for reading we can’t help but respond with a big fat, ‘WHAT?!’ We know all too well that as you get older your recreational time gets less and less and responsibilities more and more, so we need to remind our kids that this is the time to make the most out of having this opportunity to be young!
So when better to switch on to reading than during the MS READaTHON? Sign up your child now and see the benefits for yourself. The reading period is from Oct 11th – Nov 11th but what we usually see is that Christmas lists after the MS READaTHON tend to feature more books than usual! Check out our Family Activities section for info on out-of-the-ordinary ways to get your child’s imagination flowing.
