School Visit Programme Blasts Off!

The MS READaTHON is the biggest campaign run by MS Ireland but this year we thought we’d push the boat out and make it a little bit bigger. We can’t help but get excited about our new School Visit Programme. The overall aim of the programme is to teach children about MS in their local area and introduce the school to the MS READaTHON. This programme was designed to complement the other new interactive parts of this year's campaign - the Teacher Resource Pack and Abigail's Story.

For the last few months we have been secretly recruiting some amazing spokespeople to become MS READaTHON Ambassadors who will be able to share their remarkable stories with you in class. Some of these ambassadors have MS while others are relatives or close friends of a person with MS. We have selected people from all parts of Ireland and over the next few weeks our ambassadors will be making contact with their local schools to set up a time and date for a visit.

The visit itself can happen in a number of ways. We feel it would be best if the ambassador could speak to a class personally. We know how important time is to a teacher and the presentation will only take around 15 minutes so we think this is the easiest and most efficient way for pupils to learn about MS. The alternative is that the ambassador sits down with a teacher and or principal and tells them about the benefits of taking part in the MS READaTHON.

As we said, the people making the presentations are either living with MS or are close to a person with MS so this is the best way for children to learn about how MS affects people right across Ireland. There are loads of fun things for the ambassador to do with the students to help them understand the effects and symptoms of MS so it’s not just one big lecture, hopefully making it more interesting for everyone.

If your school hasn’t been contacted or you would like a visit from one of our ambassadors, please call the MS READaTHON Team on 01 678 1600 and we will organise it.

If you have had a visit from an MS READaTHON Ambassador, we would also love to hear how your school got on, let us know!
