Moving/returning to live in Ireland if you have a diagnosis of MS

To access a neurologist in Ireland you must have a referral from a general practitioner (GP) based in Ireland.  Ireland has a two-tiered health system; the public and private health sectors. Your GP can either refer you to a Neurologist in the Irish Public Health System (you will then go on a waiting list), or you can request a referral to a Neurologist in the private health sector (shorter waiting time, but you must pay for this service).

Once you have identified a GP to register within  Ireland, you should link in with them in advance of your move to Ireland and request that they indicate which hospital they would be likely to refer you to for Neurology and if they could make this referral prior to your move here.

Regardless of whether the GP can make the Neurology referral prior to your move to Ireland, it is advised that you then email the identified Hospitals Neurology department and explain that you are moving to Ireland and when that is likely to be and to request that your current Neurologist do the same.

If you currently receive a hospital-based treatment, it is advised that you receive your treatment in your current country as close as possible to the date you plan to travel to Ireland to give as much time as possible to have everything in place in Ireland to access treatment here.
