Neurology waiting lists still too high

In the HSE Performance report published June 2012, neurology is one of six specialities accounting for high numbers of patients waiting longer than 12 months for an OPD appointment.

The NAI is not surprised by these figures, having repeatedly highlighted the issue of waiting lists of up to 2 years to see a neurologist.

The NAI support the work of the neurology outpatient national clinical programme in securing additional neurology posts in recent months. They are however concered that the recent recruitment freeze by the HSE could impact on these posts.

NAI will continue to highlight the Comhairle nanOspideal recommendation (2003) of one consultant neurologist per 100,000 population which Ireland is still failing to meet.
