Stephen received the award at a ceremony during the MS Ireland National Conference 2026 in Galway, recognising his commitment to creating new opportunities for people living with MS.
In 2024, Stephen encouraged MS Ireland to organise its first 'Try Sailing' event in Dublin, which he helped coordinate. What began as a single event has since grown into nine programmes across Ireland in 2026, supported by a dedicated network of volunteers.
For many participants, these experiences provide opportunities they may never have imagined possible. Beyond the physical activity, the programmes help build confidence, encourage friendships and provide valuable peer support, with participants reporting improvements in their wellbeing, optimism and sense of achievement.
Working largely behind the scenes, Stephen has played a central role in securing funding, coordinating volunteers, developing partnerships and supporting participants.
His work with organisations including Sailing into Wellness and Oceans of Hope has helped expand the initiative and create new opportunities for the MS community.
Stephen also helped establish the Irish branch of Oceans of Hope, an international charity supporting people with MS, enabling participants from Ireland to take part in overseas experiences in countries including Greece and Turkey.
A passionate advocate for inclusion and wellbeing, Stephen regularly shares his own experience of living with MS through local media, including Radio Kerry, helping to raise awareness of the condition and the importance of staying active and connected.
Congratulating Stephen and acknowledging the contributions of all those nominated for this year's awards, Mary McKeon, Chairperson of MS Ireland, said:
"All of the nominees this year are worthy of awards, and it is very difficult to select overall winners from such a terrific group of nominees. We are fortunate to have such a wonderful MS community, where so many people do outstanding work, day in and day out, all around the country. MS Ireland congratulates Stephen on this well-deserved recognition and thanks him for his continued dedication to the MS community".
