People Living with MS Invited to Take Part in Cancer Care Research Study

Researchers at Dublin City University (DCU) are inviting people living with MS and other mobility impairments to take part in a new study exploring experiences of cancer care in Ireland.

The study, “A Dual Challenge: Exploring the Barriers and Facilitators to Supportive Care for People Living with Pre-Existing Mobility Impairments”, aims to better understand the experiences of people who were living with a mobility impairment before receiving a cancer diagnosis.

While previous research has highlighted barriers to cancer screening for people with mobility impairments, less is known about their experiences during cancer treatment, follow-up care and recovery. This research seeks to identify unmet needs, barriers and facilitators to supportive cancer care and help inform more inclusive healthcare services in the future.

Researchers are seeking participants aged 18 years and over who:

• Are living with MS or another mobility impairment that pre-dated a cancer diagnosis and are currently undergoing or have completed cancer treatment.

• Are a family member or daily support person of someone with a mobility impairment who has experienced cancer.

• Are a healthcare professional with experience supporting people with mobility impairments through cancer treatment and survivorship.

Participation involves a confidential one-to-one interview lasting up to 45 minutes. Interviews can be conducted in person, online or by telephone, with flexibility and rest breaks available if required.

The study is being conducted by Noreena Coyle, a PhD researcher in the School of Psychology at Dublin City University, under the supervision of Dr Simon Dunne, Dr Aoife McNicoll and Professor Pamela Gallagher. The research is funded by the Irish Cancer Society.
