Áine Goggin – Galway | MS Journeys

For Áine Goggin from Galway, World MS Day is about bringing people together and highlighting the many different experiences of living with MS.

“It brings people together and celebrates MS as just one part of a person, not the whole picture.”

For Áine, living with MS can be challenging, particularly because it is often an invisible illness.

“It is challenging as it is an invisible illness and it can feel lonely.”

She says MS has changed her by making her stronger and more compassionate towards herself, while also encouraging her to keep moving forward with her goals.

“I have become stronger, more compassionate toward myself and I don’t wait — I keep moving forward with my own dreams.”

For someone newly diagnosed, Áine encourages people to reach out for support and not to face MS alone.

“Talk to someone, seek support and reach out to MS Ireland.”

She highlights the importance of community and connection, both through MS Ireland supports and through shared experiences with others living with MS.

“It creates a social connection and a support system with others who understand.”

Áine says being part of the MS community is very important to her, helping her stay connected and maintain a positive outlook.

“Social events and teaching MS yoga classes mean I stay connected to others and keep my spirits lifted.”

She also speaks about how much she is inspired by others in the MS community.

“My students inspire me… it is an honour to teach them.”

One of the things that has surprised her most about living with MS is the power of the mind and how small changes can make a difference.

“The power of your mind and how small changes can help when living with MS.”

Among the biggest challenges she faces are the unknowns that can arise on a daily basis and balancing life as a mother and wife.

“The unknown challenges that arise and how to navigate them.”

What helps her manage is staying connected to others and continuing to support both herself and those around her.

“Talking to others, building connections and supporting each other.”

Áine is proud of what she has achieved while living with MS, particularly the success of her yoga classes in Galway and the support network they have created.

“I am proud of the success of the yoga classes and helping others realise their potential.”

She is also keen to challenge misconceptions about MS.

“Some of us can do more than you think — don’t write us off.”

Her message to others living with MS is simple and supportive:

“Be kind and compassionate towards yourself and take each day as it comes.”

Áine’s story is one of positivity, connection and determination, showing the importance of community, self-belief and continuing to move forward.
