Anthony O’Connor – Louth | MS Journeys
For Anthony O’Connor from Louth, World MS Day is an important reminder that no one has to face MS alone.
“World MS Day is important to me as it reminds me that I am not alone in my struggle with MS.”
For Anthony, living with MS often means living with uncertainty.
“MS can sometimes mean uncertainty.”
That uncertainty has changed how he looks at life, but it has also strengthened his sense of purpose.
“I try to be a more positive person because of my diagnosis. I want to live a fulfilling life.”
For someone newly diagnosed, Anthony’s message is calm and reassuring.
“Not to panic. There are resources, help and a whole community to lean on.”
The support of his local community, particularly his MS Ireland branch, has been invaluable throughout his journey.
“The community and especially my local branch have been completely invaluable to my family and me.”
He says being part of the wider MS community means feeling included, supported and understood.
“It means inclusion… there are people who genuinely care and reach out.”
One of the biggest challenges he faced early on was navigating the amount of information available.
“There is so much information out there… it can be overwhelming at first.”
Over time, he found that speaking with his branch and medical team helped him find clarity and direction.
To manage his MS, Anthony finds being outdoors and staying active particularly helpful.
“Getting outdoors for a walk helps to calm me whenever I feel anxious.”
He also highlights the importance of connecting with others who understand.
“Having a group of people who understand what you are going through really helps.”
Anthony is proud of what he has achieved while living with MS, including climbing Croagh Patrick with his wife and starting a creative writing course.
“I climbed Croagh Patrick after my diagnosis and began a creative writing course I had always wanted to do.”
He is also keen to challenge the misconception that MS limits what a person can achieve.
“If you can manage your MS, there is nothing you cannot do.”
His message to others living with MS is simple and powerful:
“You are stronger than you think and part of a community that will always look out for you.”
Anthony’s story is one of optimism, connection and determination, showing how support and perspective can help people continue to live fulfilling lives.
