John Bergin – Laois | MS Journeys
For John Bergin from Laois, World MS Day is important because it helps raise awareness of what MS is and the reality of living with the condition.
“To bring more awareness about people living with MS and what MS is and what it can do.”
For John, living with MS means living with uncertainty.
“Every minute, every hour and every day is a mystery.”
That unpredictability has changed how he sees life. Since his diagnosis, John says he appreciates life more deeply and tries to make the most of every day.
“I feel like I appreciate life more since I got diagnosed. I don’t take any day for granted and I try to make the most of every day no matter how good or bad.”
For someone newly diagnosed, his message is one of reassurance.
“You are not alone… reach out to MS Ireland because the support and care they provide goes above and beyond.”
The support of family, friends and the local MS community has been central to his journey.
“Without family and friends I would be lost. The support I get is incredible.”
He says being part of a community of people who understand MS has made a huge difference.
“I get to be around people like me… people who know what you are going through.”
MS Ireland has also played an important role in his life, providing support and a strong sense of connection.
“MS Ireland has given me a community where people understand me.”
For John, being part of the wider MS community means everything.
“It means the world and more.”
One of the biggest challenges he faces is the unpredictability of symptoms.
“Fatigue, walking, balance and going from feeling fine to not feeling fine at all.”
What helps him manage is the support of those around him.
“My family, friends and my MS community… knowing I am not alone.”
John is proud of the roles he continues to hold in his life.
“I can still be a husband to my wife, a father to my kids… and I’m still able to help people as a personal trainer and swimming teacher.”
He is also keen to challenge the misconception that if someone looks well, they must be well.
“Just because I look ok doesn’t mean I am ok… hidden disabilities.”
His message to others living with MS is simple:
“Reach out to MS Ireland and remember you are not alone.”
John’s story reflects the uncertainty of living with MS, but also the strength that can come from support, community and connection.
