Keith Byrne – Dublin | MS Journeys

For Keith Byrne from Dublin, World MS Day is a chance to recognise not only those living with MS, but also the families and friends who support them every day.

“World MS Day is a recognition of all those past and present affected by MS. For each of us diagnosed, there are family and friends affected too.”

For Keith, living with MS is a daily reminder to take care of himself and focus on what really matters.

“MS is a daily reminder for me to take good care of myself and not to let trivial things stress me out.”

He says MS has encouraged him to step outside his comfort zone and set realistic, achievable goals.

“MS has encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and regularly set myself realistic, attainable goals.”

For someone newly diagnosed, Keith’s message is one of strength and reassurance.

“You are your greatest asset. Embrace change. You are not alone.”

He acknowledges that MS can be a lonely condition at times, which is why having support is so important.

“MS can be a very lonely disease at times, but it is always important to have someone close who will listen.”

MS Ireland has played a key role in helping him come to terms with his diagnosis and connect with others.

“MS Ireland were instrumental when I first came to terms with my diagnosis.”

Being part of the MS community has also meant a great deal to him.

“As someone with MS for over 10 years now, the MS community has always been understanding, welcoming and supportive. I feel at home with them.”

One of the things that has surprised him most about living with MS is discovering his own inner strength.

“My own inner strength… I always manage to fight back.”

Among the biggest challenges he faces are brain fog and fatigue, particularly while balancing family life and work.

“Brain fog and fatigue are my most common symptoms. I have three young children and work as a primary school teacher, so it can be difficult to manage at times.”

To help manage his MS, Keith focuses on healthy eating and regular exercise.

“Eating healthy and exercising regularly are essential.”

Keith is proud of what he has achieved while living with MS, including raising his family, running the Dublin Marathon in 2018, and changing careers.

“I’ve become a dad of three, ran the Dublin Marathon and changed career to become a primary school teacher.”

His message to others living with MS is simple and powerful:

“Stay strong. From the depths of despair rises hope, always.”

Keith’s story is one of resilience, perspective and hope, showing how support, determination and community can help people continue to live life fully.
