Mary Martin – Donegal | MS Journeys

For Mary, being part of the World MS Day campaign is about helping people better understand what life with MS is really like.

“This is me. This is my life. I have MS and I wear it proudly.”

Mary, from Donegal, describes living with MS as both a profound challenge and a life-changing experience.

“It is an overwhelming mental and physical challenge, yet ultimately a powerful and transformative experience.”

She speaks openly about how MS has affected her both mentally and emotionally. At times, she says, it has pushed her to her limits, but through that she has also found resilience and strength.

“Sometimes it pushes me to my limits, but I become resilient and want to be unbreakable. I like to think I have MS, but it does not decide who I am as a person.”

For someone newly diagnosed, Mary’s message is deeply personal and compassionate.

“Take time to process and take care of your mental health. It is important to seek support.”

She says that, while the early stages of diagnosis were difficult, getting the right support made a huge difference.

“I went through a very difficult time, but with help I was able to come through it.”

The support of her local MS branch has also been very important in her journey.

“My MS branch was very good to me. My friends try to understand, but sometimes it can feel like no one fully understands what daily life with MS is like.”

Mary is passionate about raising awareness of the realities of living with MS, particularly the fact that it is not always visible.

She wants people to understand that although there are difficult days, it is still possible to live a full and meaningful life.

Through her role as Donegal ambassador, Mary is helping to ensure that people living with MS feel seen, heard and supported.

Mary’s story is one of honesty, courage and resilience, showing that even through the most difficult moments, it is possible to find strength and move forward.
