Rachael Byrne – Monaghan | MS Journeys

For Rachael Byrne from Monaghan, living with MS means managing daily physical and mental challenges while also finding a deeper appreciation for life, family and the present moment.

“Multiple sclerosis massively challenges my body and my mind, but it has made me more grateful than I have ever been and given me the determination to enjoy each and every day.”

Rachael says MS has changed how she values life and the people around her. It has encouraged her to slow down and prioritise her mental wellbeing.

For someone newly diagnosed, her advice is to take things one step at a time.

“Take it day by day, and don’t force yourself to come to terms with it immediately.”

She also encourages people to make use of MS Ireland’s supports, including newly diagnosed events.

Family, friends and her local MS branch have been hugely important in Rachael’s journey. She values the encouragement she receives and the opportunity to connect with others through local events and online classes.

MS Ireland has also played an important role in her life, from attending events to connecting with others in the community. Her daughter has even taken part in the MS Readathon, raising over €2,000.

For Rachael, being part of the MS community means feeling part of a family.

Her message reflects both strength and perspective.

“I am stronger with MS than I was without it.”

Fatigue is one of her biggest challenges, along with managing stress and its impact on her condition. To help manage her MS, Rachael relies on medication, mindfulness, listening to her body and taking rest when needed.

She is proud of the life she continues to build, including her family, her relationship and a full-time job she loves.

Rachael is also keen to challenge misconceptions about MS.

“MS does not always mean becoming wheelchair-bound, and it is not a terminal illness.”

Her message to others living with MS is clear:

“Please utilise the many supports your local branch can offer. You are not alone, even though it can feel that way.”

For Rachael, World MS Day is important because it raises awareness of the invisible nature of MS and highlights the vital role of local MS Ireland branches.
