Green Fingers at the MS Care Centre

Volunteers from D&B Information Solutions tranform the garden at Ireland's only respite and therapy centre for people with MS

Recently the staff at our MS Care Centre had cause to be extra cheerful as 22 helping hands arrived at the Centre ready to work!

The team of 11 volunteers from D&B Information Solutions signed on to tidy the Centre’s large garden and were more than happy to get stuck into the dirt when they arrived. Throughout the day they were digging, weeding and planting to make the garden a relaxing and scenic space for MS Care Centre residents to spend a sunny afternoon.

Mike Laffan, the group’s leader, commented on the fun they had during the day (despite the strenuous physical toll!), “Did we enjoy the back breaking labour, you mean?! No, it was good, you could actually see the patients who will be getting so much use from it.”

As corporate volunteering grows more and more valuable for non-profits it is reassuring to see larger companies encouraging staff to get out and help the community. D&B allows every team two charity days per year and this gardening group was led to MS Ireland by a family connection of one of its staff.

The garden now looks fantastic and it is now a lovely space for residents of the Care Centre to enjoy which was, as Mike says, the driving force for the team to participate in the MS Ireland Corporate Programme. He also mentioned that the experience is one he would happily recommend to other companies looking to get involved with their local community, “Definitely. It’s a great opportunity for office-based staff to get out and see the how just three, four, five, six hours can really benefit someone.”
