Monday February 27 2017 01:52 PM

A new incidence study on MS in the Republic of Ireland has been published. The study, carried out by staff from St Vincent’s Hospital Dublin, was performed to ascertain all new cases of MS diagnosed from 1st March 2014 – 28th February 2015.

Highlights from the findings include:

  • This is the first prospective incidence study of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the Republic of Ireland.
  • Ireland has a high incidence of MS with a persistent regional gradient.
  • The age of onset of relapsing MS appears to be increasing over the last 20 years.
  • Unemployment rate of 8% directly attributable to MS within 1 year of diagnosis.
  • Rising levels of undiagnosed depression seen in recently diagnosed MS.

The highest incidence rate of MS in Ireland has historically been in Ulster! Has this 'research' shown anything different?
