The National Advocacy Service (NAS) was set up to provide an independent, representative advocacy service for people with disabilities. It is organised and managed by the Boards of five Citizen Information Services and is supported by the Citizens Information Board.
The service is provided by five regional teams across the country in the following areas:
People can get in touch with the advocacy service directly or they may be referred to it by a friend, family or other services. Disability service-providers may seek an advocacy service on behalf of people with disabilities. Each of the above teams has a regional manager, senior advocate, an administrator and between five and seven advocates.
For people with MS the advocacy service helps to provide independent, accurate information, improves equality of opportunity and provides a pathway to social and other services. People that may be at a disadvantage when claiming their entitlements because of disability or social inequalities will benefit from the service.
It is also a means of empowering people by supporting them to assert their views and claim their entitlements and also where necessary represent and negotiate on the person’s behalf.
