The EHIC gives you access to public healthcare services during a temporary stay in another EU country, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, at the same cost as locals. That means if they get free or reduced-cost care, so do you.
It’s especially helpful if you’re managing a long-term condition like MS, as it covers necessary treatment related to your condition while abroad. It doesn’t replace travel insurance, but it can help with things like GP visits, prescriptions, or urgent care.
How to apply?
If you have a PPS number and are living in Ireland, you can apply online through the HSE website: https://www2.hse.ie/services/schemes-allowances/ehic/. You can also apply by post or in person at your local health office. It’s completely free, and once approved, the card is valid for up to four years.
It’s worth applying now, before you start packing. Processing can take a bit of time—especially during the summer rush!
So, alongside your sunglasses and sandals, make sure your EHIC is tucked safely in your wallet. Travelling with MS can take some planning, but the right prep can help make it smoother. The EHIC is one of those small things that can make a big difference.
Safe travels!
